Hello!
My name is Sam Keenan and I am so excited to be a Butler University graduate come May of 2020 with a bachelor's degree in Elementary Education and a minor in Mild Intervention. I have loved my time at Butler University (Go Dawgs!) and while I am sad to be leaving my second home, I am thrilled to begin my teaching journey.
As a child, I was always a fan of playing school with my friends, but I did not consider it to be a career choice until I was about 11 years old. When I was learning how to read, I learned by memorizing the shape of words and the order the letters came in. Therefore, I did not learn phonics which made sounding out words almost impossible for me. My parents were told that I would eventually fall behind in reading, so I started tutoring. I began to lose all confidence in myself because after being in phonics tutoring for 3 years, I had yet to figure out how to sound out words. My tutoring ended due to my frustration and lack of progress, but eventually I learned how to sound out words once I began taking Spanish classes. This is what inspired me to be a teacher; I never want another student to feel the way I did. I can't wait to meet my future students and be an advocate for their needs while learning as much as possible from them. I hope my classroom will be a safe haven for my students where they are encouraged to do their very best. |
